It's totally not over yet: Nike terminated Pacquiao's contract and called him 'abhorrent'.
Mayweather & Enrile speak up too.
February 18, 2016 (Thursday) –Popular sports equipment brand Nike terminated endorsement deals with Manny Pacquiao after blogger Aries Dela Cruz called out boycott against its products.
Even after he apologized for his discriminating comment against the LGBT community, the Saranggani Representative and Senatorial aspirant Manny Pacquiao has yet to witness the repercussions of his action. Early today, Nike castigated Pacquiao's comment about gay unions as 'worse than animals'. Nike described it as 'abhorrent'. In the same statement, Nike said that they’re against discrimination therefore the Pinoy boxing champion was no longer in business with them.
The online petition to boycott Nike products if the said brand won't cut its deals with the world boxing champion gathered 1,500 signatures already. Cultural activist Carlos Celdran also signed this petition submitted by a blogger named Aries Dela Cruz on change.org. This petition mainly called out Nike's attention to send message of respect, inclusion and tolerance to the LGBT Community.
In an interview with TMZ, Floyd Mayweather was also asked about Pacquiao’s comment regarding same-sex marriage. Mayweather said, "We should stay positive. We should let people live their lives the way they want to live their lives.... To each his own.” Mayweather defeated Pacquiao in the ring way back May 2016.
Meanwhile, Manny Pacquiao finally got an ally in Senator Juan Ponce Enrile. In a tweet report, DZRH quoted Enrile’s reaction about the issue. Enrile said that they [LGBT] have to go to the other planet. He even added that Manny Pacquiao will win the elections even without the LGBT community’s support. This comment of his drew the ire from the enraged netizens.
