Another tragic incident happened over Ukraine last Thursday, July 17, 2014 when Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down. All the passengers including the crews with a total of 298 people all in all were presumed to be dead. There were 15 crews and 280 passengers onboard the plane. This is another incident reported that saddened the world.

The said jet was travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down at the Ukrainian air. According to the Malaysia Airlines, they lost contact on the said plane at around 14:15 (GMT) which is 30 kilometers from Tamak waypoint. Looking at the area, it has an approximate distance from the Russia-Ukraine border of 50 kilometers. A separatist in Ukraine that is pro-Russian is believed to have fired a missile that eventually brought down the plane killing all onboard.


The plane had different nationalities on board, and counting them, there were 189 from the Netherlands, 44 from Malaysia, 27 from Australia, 12 from Indonesia, 9 from UK, 4 from Germany, 4 from Belgium, 3 from the Philippines, 1 from Canada, and 1 from New Zealand. Further investigation is being done in order to fully know the nationalities of those who were from UK because there is a possibility that some of the passengers have dual nationalities.

There is still no confirmation with regards to the one responsible for the plane crash. The rebels denied that they were the ones who did this. In fact, they claimed through a tweet that they do not have such air defense. On the other hand, Russia also denied the attack and Vladimir Putin is blaming the Ukraine for the attack. Someone named Igor Strelkov who is a associated with Ukrainian rebel claimed the responsibility for the attack through a social media account but the post was later on deleted.
The Story Behind the Shot Down of MH17 Last July 17, 2014

One of the fatalities in the plane crash is the prominent HIV researcher and activist. Because of what happened, the world has lost a brilliant one in the field named Jeop Lange who will supposedly be attending an International AIDS Conference called AIDS 2014. Lange is a former president of the International AIDS Society.

Three Filipinos died in the plane crash and they belong to one family, this was confirmed by the Department of Foreign Affairs. The fatalities were Irene Gunawan, 54, Sherryl Shania Gunawan, 15, and Darryl Dwight Gunawan, 20. The Gunawan family was based in The Netherlands. A close coordination to the Malaysian Airlines by the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is being done in order to support the family of those who died who are requesting that the remains of their loved ones will be brought home.

Because of what happened, the UN Security Council would like to investigate through a “full, thorough, and independent international investigation.” This was reported by Reuters. There are more stories to come for the going crashing down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, in fact, there is a viral video circulating online about a certain scenario inside the plane before it was shot down. On the short video that was uploaded on social media, it was seen that the passengers were busy fixing their things and getting ready for the flight.



One of the passengers named Cor Pan made an eerie post on Facebook joking about the disappearance of the MH370 in Indian Ocean that is why he posted a picture of the MH17 with a caption “If it disappears, this is what it looks like.”  He was with his wife on board the plane when it crashed.
